After the summer holidays it was time to gather for our first proper unit meeting. We started the day with an ice breaker – Hello Bingo! The Scouts mingled finding other Scouts that had completed what was in the bingo square, for example “Played a musical instrument”. The parents and guardians also had their own Hello Bingo to complete! After an introduction to what our jamboree journey was going to entail it was time to split our Scouts and adults.
The Scouts started creating our unit identity as BirmingJam, including designing and presenting unit badge ideas and forming our code of conduct #youshape, continued to get to know each other with some games and even did some line dancing! We are going to West Virginia after all!
The parents/guardians also had a busy day becoming JAFFA CAKES: Jamboree Adults, Fun Filled Association of Caring And Kind Enthusiastic Supporters! They discussed fundraising at an individual, group, district and unit level and how different types of fundraisers are best utilised at certain levels. They then split into their districts selecting a Chairperson, Secretary and Treasurer and developed some fundraising ideas which were then shared with the other districts.
We then came back together for investiture. Deputy County Commissioner (Programme), Nick Thomas was there to invest our leaders, Richard, Liz C, Gez and Liz K and they then invested the Scouts. Nearly 40 investitures! The largest investiture any of us had ever seen!
Welcome to BirmingJam Unit 79!
A big thanks to CTC Kingshurst Academy for letting us use their halls!
